Caption This – O.I. Awareness Day Contest

Hi there, Fans & Friends!

Today is the launch of my Caption This – O.I. Awareness Day contest. The one and only winner of this contest will receive a copy of Plain Jane The SHOCKUMENTARY, a canvas lunch bag sporting my Hash It Out With Jane logo, AND a print of the photo with the winning caption on it! “What photo?” you ask. Good question! We’ll get to that in just a moment.

First, let me tell you what O.I. Awareness Day is. Nearly every social cause or disability has its own Awareness Day. The disability I have is, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (O.I.) This day is also often referred to as “Wishbone Day.”

There are a variety of ways that people celebrate O.I. Awareness Day. To show solidarity, everyone wears a yellow t-shirt. Another thing that folks do is, decorate everything with snowflake shaped ornaments to symbolize that every child born with O.I. is different. Then, there is the “Wishbone Day” logo that is available on a yellow t-shirt as well.

I fully support people in doing whatever it is they need to do in order to positively express their identity, as long as it isn’t harming anyone. None of these established rituals for celebrating O.I. awareness really resonates with me though.

I am as cracker white as cracker white gets. If I wear a yellow shirt, I’m going to look ill instead of disabled (there is a difference). The snowflake thing is kind of cute but still not my style. Plus, I roll with way too many perverts to wear anything that reads “Wishbone.” So, how is this non-conformist going to express acceptance, solidarity, and support of my fellow O.I. people?

I’m going to sponsor the Caption This – O.I. Awareness Day Contest! The prizes given away in this contest are my way of expressing my identity and the role O.I. plays in my life experience. Scroll down for contest rules and the photo that needs a caption! Have fun!
